Shibuya - Hachiko
In this super cool collaboration, Makoto Watches of Canada and AndoAndoAndo did something fun to Makoto's unique Shibuya Watch to make it more memorable!
As many of you know, the Shibuya scramble crossing is said to be the world's busiest pedestrian crossing. And Makoto Watches made that into a fantastic watch dial with the texture of asphalt, with full block lumed crossing lines.
When I looked at this, I thought of a place in Shibuya, next to the crossing, where people gather to remember a story, or rather a history, of a faithful Akita dog who waited his owner's return from work at the Shibuya station everyday. And everyday the dog came to the station to wait for the owner's return, not knowing his passing, for almost 10 years.
Now in our collaboration, they can meet each other every single hour. How beautiful is it?!
The 3 o'clock marker has a different color. This is intentional, as it is said that the dog met his owner at the station at 3 o'clock!

The case back has a beautiful hydraulic pressed 3D relief of the dog and its owner. Also you see the HACHI 0000 that is the mark for the first edition. This bit was originally planned to hold the serial number of the each watch, but for some unknown reason, the manufacturer made a mistake and all the first batch comes with HACHI 0000. "0" in Japanese can be read as "rei / 霊", meaning ghostly spirit, and "four" in Japanese could represents death, as the number four can be read as "shi / 死", death.
Would it be a message from the dog and its owner? Who knows, but I think it's a good representation of "memento mori" a famous Latin phrase for reminding us that we are all mortal beings. Maybe we should interpret it as Hachi and the professor telling us from beyond, to cherish your time being together.
